Quantum of Solace Review
With nearly $70 million in the US box office over the weekend alone, Quantum of Solace became the 22nd bond film ever to be made. With Daniel Craig returning and a fresh set of characters, the film's action-packed car chases and frenetic action sequences seek to reinvigorate the Bond franchise. End result: an awesome sequel to 2006's Casino Royale.
Not only does the new movie use the Bourne-style of handheld shots at every turn, but it also rips a few things shot for shot off of The Bourne Ultimatum. This influence gives the movie a faster look and also places the audience inside the action. While this technique may lack originality, the Bourne franchise was going to inevitably change how action scenes were shot anyway. As a huge fan of handheld films like Bourne, Cloverfield, and Saving Private Ryan, this just adds to the new environment.
With action at every turn and explosions filling the screen, the film manages to include a huge amount of storyline and furthers the plot for the next film. It's obvious where the third movie wants to go. In fact, this is one of those movies that needs to be watched a few times after just watching the first installment. If you go in without watching Casino Royale, the plot will fly straight over your head.
Daniel Craig continues as one of the best Bonds ever, and also a more human one. Let's face it, James Bond is one of the most static characters ever thought up by anyone. Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are probably the closest the Bond franchise will ever come to creating a dynamic main character.
In the end, the movie has all the elements that a Bond film needs (except the famous, "Bond, James Bond"), and I'm looking forward to the next chapter of the deepening series.
So, as a worththy sequel to Casino Royale, I gladly recommend Quantum of Solace.
Overall Rating: 9/10 (I know Brian will disagree with me on this one)
